Rosalind Franklin

Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958)  was a groundbreaking female scientist whose work transformed our understanding of life at the molecular level. While she is best known for contributing to the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure, Franklin used incredibly advanced imaging techniques, more specifically X-ray diffraction to capture photographs of DNA that revealed its shape and order. Despite the challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated field, with her research one of the most important scientific discoveries of the 20th century. Today, Rosalind Franklin is noticed for her contributions to the field of genetics and her lasting impact on science as well as the recognition of women in research.  (Biography.com Editors, n.d.)

Franklin went on to earn her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Cambridge university. While in school she developed a strong foundation for scientific research. In 1946, she moved to Paris to work at the Laboratoire Central des Services Chimiques de l’État, she trained under Jacques Mering where she was taught how to use X-ray diffraction. Later on we will see that this skill led her to one of the most important discoveries of the 20th

One of Franklin’s most notable accomplishments was capturing the famous, “Photo 51.” This image revealed the true shape of DNA, the double helix, a mystery in science for centuries. This image fundamentally changed our entire understanding of genetics. Not only did Franklin work on DNA, but she also made significant contributions to the study of carbon structures, later helping to engineer heat-resistant materials. While in this field, she published plenty of articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. While she was oftentimes the only woman speaking at scientific conferences across the globe, she continued to present herself and her work in an outstanding fashion. Over her life, we see that Franklin made many influential scientific discoveries. However, her achievements go far beyond her research. Franklin worked at a time of widespread discrimination against women in science, she served as a role model for other women demonstrating her perseverance and excellence. Her achievements inspired future generations of women to pursue careers in STEM fields and helped to challenge the gender barrier that occurred. Today, she is not only praised for her role in uncovering the structure of DNA, but also for encouraging all women to go out and pursue whatever their dreams may be. (Biography.com Editors, n.d.)


Rosalind Franklin’s legacy is one of triumph, innovation, and grit. Her work revolutionized scientific research and the modern understanding of DNA while also contributing to countless other advancements in the science community. It is clear that Franklin’s presence in the science field helped pave the way for the inclusion of women all around the world in STEM.
